House rewires across Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Hampshire

There is no fixed expiry date on an electrical installation, but there are reliable signals. Rubber-insulated cable, common in houses wired before the mid-1960s, goes brittle and cracks away from the conductor — it cannot be patched, only replaced. Fabric-sheathed cable behaves the same way. Round-pin or two-pin sockets, a wooden-backed fuse box, no sockets upstairs, or black rubber cable visible in the loft all point to an installation that has passed its service life.

More often it is subtler. A board that trips repeatedly, lights that dim when the shower runs, or a house with four sockets in a room that needs twelve. Those are circuits doing more than they were designed for, and a rewire is what fixes the cause rather than the symptom.

A full rewire replaces every cable, every accessory and the consumer unit throughout the property. A partial replaces specific circuits or floors — commonly the ground floor during a kitchen refit, or the upstairs lighting where the cable has perished.

Partial only makes sense where the rest of the installation tests clean. We test before we advise, and we will tell you honestly which one your house actually needs. Quoting a full rewire on a house that needs half of one is an easy way to win a job and a poor way to keep a customer.

Circuits are designed around how you actually use the house, not around what happens to be convenient to run. That means asking where the desk goes, which wall the television is on, whether the kitchen island needs power, and where you have been running extension leads for years.

First fix is chasing and running cable. Second fix is accessories, the board, and making the installation live. Then full dead and live testing to BS 7671, circuit by circuit, and your certificate. We self-certify under our NAPIT registration.
