Caversham, Berkshire
Lower Caversham is Victorian terraced with later infill, and it behaves like the terraces across the river — the classic rewire and inspection market, where original cable is often still in place behind the plaster. Caversham Heights is a different proposition: large detached houses on sizeable plots, around two thirds of them detached, most built between 1900 and 1930, with brick and flint construction in the older ones that makes surface fixing and cable routing something to think about rather than assume. Within the Heights you can almost date a house from its road. Woodcote Way, Geoffreyson Road and Shepherds Lane went up in the 1930s on a cleared apple orchard; Silverthorne Drive, Queensborough Drive and Carlton Road came in the 1960s on a former gravel quarry. Then there is Caversham Park Village, which is the most useful estate in the whole area from our point of view: roughly 1,500 houses built by one developer, Davis Estates, across a 180-acre site between the mid 1960s and the early 1970s. One developer and one short window means near-identical original installations across the whole estate, so if we have seen the board on Galsworthy Drive we have a very good idea what is behind the cover on Milestone Way. Two conservation areas cover the older core, St Peter's and Surley Row, and the listed cottages around St Peter's run from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century.
