Fault finding

What the job actually involves.

01

Why fault finding is priced differently

Almost everything else we do can be quoted as a fixed price, because the scope is known before we start. Fault finding cannot. The whole job is working out what the problem is, and that can take twenty minutes or most of a day.

So it is charged at an hourly rate, agreed before we come out. Once the fault is found, any repair is quoted as its own fixed price and you decide whether to go ahead.

02

What we usually find

Intermittent trips are the common one, and the usual cause is moisture — an outdoor socket, a garden light, a shower pull-cord — or a nail or screw through a cable. Circuits that are dead but not tripped often come down to a loose connection at an accessory, which is heat, which is worth finding.

We test rather than guess. Splitting the installation and testing section by section finds the cause; swapping accessories until something changes does not, and it gets expensive.

Questions

Questions about electrical fault finding.

How much does fault finding cost?

It's charged at an hourly rate rather than a fixed price, because the work is finding out what the problem is. Call us and we'll tell you the current rate before we come out.

My RCD keeps tripping — is that dangerous?

It means the RCD is doing its job. Something is leaking current to earth, and the usual culprits are moisture in an outdoor circuit or a damaged cable. It's worth finding rather than repeatedly resetting.
