Woodley Aerodrome opened in 1929 on a hundred acres of farmland, and around six thousand aircraft were built and flown from here between 1933 and 1962. Flying stopped in the early 1960s, and after gravel extraction the airfield itself was redeveloped for housing and light industry by Adwest Properties during the 1980s. That matters to us because it is a single, datable tranche of housing, now around forty years old, wired after RCDs arrived in 1981 but long before they were required on every socket circuit. Those boards are the most common job we see in Woodley. The older tier is the post-war estate building of the 1950s and 60s, before the town centre was rebuilt in the 1960s and before Woodley gained town status in 1974 with around 29,000 residents. That stock sits either side of the 1966 earthing change and the switch to PVC cable around 1970, so it is where genuine rewires still come up. At the newest end, the Bulmershe Court college site was converted in 2013 and 2014 into houses, flats and a care home — 17th Edition era, and generally sound, so the work there is additional circuits and lighting rather than anything structural. Woodley Green is a designated conservation area, though the borough has not published an appraisal for it.
