The numbers tell the story better than we can. Thatcham had 4,788 people in 1951, 14,716 by 1981 and 22,284 by 2001. The town roughly tripled and then doubled again, which means the overwhelming majority of its housing went up between about 1960 and 2000. Genuinely old property here is a small minority, concentrated in the conservation area around the church and the Broadway, where the listed buildings are mostly eighteenth and nineteenth century inns and houses.
